Message from the Dean

Greetings!

This month’s newsletter highlights resources that support exploring diverse career paths, regardless of the degree level you are pursuing. Through a partnership with the Center for Graduate Career Success, we now offer two new online career preparation resources, free for all IUB Graduate Students. These resources include professional development courses, materials, recorded seminars, and videos for both master’s and doctoral students, as well as postdocs.

Beyond Graduate School can help you find information on career resources, fairs, and networking opportunities, optimize your resume to showcase your skills, and help you prepare for interviews and negotiating job offers. Another resource, Beyond the Professoriate, is designed for doctoral students and postdocs and offers additional advice on selecting between multiple career options.

The launch of these services coincides with our annual career diversity Symposium on November 6, which provides opportunities to learn about multiple career paths, showcase your skills during a job search, network, get interview advice, navigate the AI-driven job market, and attend workshops on using the Beyond platform resources. The keynote speaker will be Maren Wood, CEO of the Center for Graduate Career Success, a thought leader in career pathways for graduate degree holders. The symposium will wrap up with a networking reception, offering a chance to meet panelists and speakers, connect with friends, and relax.

And don’t forget to review upcoming fellowship and professional development opportunities listed below, such as the Three Minute Thesis Competition and the Indiana State Government agency intern program, INTERN.

Graduate Resume Writing Group

Need to finally sit down and finish your resume?

This session is all about making your resume ready. We’ll start with a few quick tips, then give you time to work, get feedback, and make edits right on the spot.

Bring a draft if you have one (or even just notes)—but no worries if you don’t, we’ll provide templates and real examples. You’ll leave with a stronger resume and a concrete next step for moving your job applications forward.

Both Master’s and PhD students are welcome!

NEW career resource for master’s students & PhDs

We’re excited to announce that our campus has subscribed to two virtual career training platforms: Beyond Graduate School (the Master’s Career Training Platform) and Beyond the Professoriate (the PhD Career Training Platform).

Master’s students and doctoral students/postdocs can now log in to these platforms and access:

On-demand career trainings to help with your job search
Career libraries with master’s and PhD alumni interviews
Monthly live webinars (and replays) on job search strategies
Workbooks to help you explore career options and strengthen job docs

Both platforms have upcoming events that we encourage you to register to attend.

Generative-AI tools have made it easy for job seekers to churn out nearly identical resumes and application materials. As a result, recruiters are now also inundated with hundreds of generic resumes that look and sound the same. This special workshop series is designed to help doctoral students, PhDs, and postdocs evaluate career options and identify next steps in building their career either as faculty or beyond the professoriate.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a research communication event founded by the University of Queensland in 2008. The event challenges master’s and doctoral students to present a compelling oration on their thesis or dissertation research and its significance to a general audience in just three minutes. All graduate students in thesis-bearing programs should consider attending to win prizes, practice your pitch, celebrate graduate research, and cheer on your friends and colleagues!

Preliminary submissions are due January 30th, 2026. The Final Live 3MT event will be February 27, 2026, at 5 pm at IU Innovates. Details are available here.

Fellowship Deadlines

Department Nomination deadline: November 3, 2025
The Wells Graduate Fellowship is awarded to a student who demonstrates the qualities for which Chancellor Wells was renowned: leadership abilities, academic excellence, character, social consciousness, and generosity of spirit. Departments may nominate one doctoral or MFA student who exemplifies the characteristics of Chancellor Wells. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowships
Student Application Deadline: Friday, December 12, 2025
Department Nomination Deadline: Friday, January 9, 2026
The Will of Dolores Zohrab Liebmann created a perpetual charitable trust designated as The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund for the purpose of funding advanced education and graduate study grants, which must be carried out entirely in the United States of America.
The Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowships are to be awarded only to candidates who have outstanding undergraduate records, have demonstrated a need for financial assistance, are citizens of the United States of America, are enrolled in accredited colleges and universities in the United States, and have received baccalaureate degrees.
The amount of each Fellowship will cover the cost of tuition only (not including fees) and a stipend of $18,000, to be allocated towards room, board, living expenses, and income taxes. The procedures governing the award granting are detailed in the application.

Boren Awards Fellowships
Internal Review Deadline (Optional): January 14, 2026
The Graduate School is happy to review your essays and/or program plans. If you would like us to review your application materials, please email them to ugsawrd@iu.edu by January 14, 2026.
Students may apply directly to the Boren Awards
National Deadline: January 21, 2026
Boren Fellowships fund research and language study proposals by U.S. graduate students in world regions critical to U.S. interests.
Awards are determined by the duration of time spent abroad. The maximum award is $25,000 for 25-52 weeks, or up to $12,500 for 12-24 weeks of overseas study. Fellowship recipients may also receive $5,000 for an optional domestic language study program.

Lake Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
External Deadline: January 16, 2026
This one-year grant is given annually to support a graduate student whose research engages issues at the intersection of faith and giving. It is intended to support the final year of dissertation writing for a doctoral candidate at a U.S. graduate school.
The fellowship includes: 3 award payments totaling $30,00, invitations to special research-focused Lake Institute engagements, the opportunity to take advantage of Lake Institute’s resources and expertise, the opportunity to share your research through our website, and citation in our seminars

INSPECT Fellowship
Internal Deadline: Monday, January 19, 2026
INSPECT is a fellowship program hosted by the Indiana Academy of Science (IAS) that aims to bring together the scientific community and state government, enabling young scientists to become effective participants in public policy.
These fellowships will enable current graduate students in STEM fields to collaborate with state officials, helping to incorporate credible scientific information into state and local policy decisions that promote the long-term health, sustainability, and economic growth of Hoosiers across Indiana. Host offices confirmed for 2026 include the Department of Natural Resources Division of Fish and Wildlife, the Department of Transportation, and the Indiana State Office of Energy Development.
The Graduate School Bloomington will provide a $10,000 stipend for the 10-week summer program. Students must be able to work full-time (40 hours/week) for the entire 10-week program.
