A Message from the Dean

We hope you are having an exciting and productive year so far, and that you'll find time in the coming weeks to enjoy the first hints of color in the forests surrounding Bloomington. The changing season also reminds us of the balance between steady progress and renewal. This month’s newsletter focuses on two major initiatives of the Graduate School: financial health and career exploration.

Financing graduate education can be challenging and complex, which is why MoneySmarts is offering a series of workshops designed specifically for graduate students. Whether you’re managing a stipend, weighing the risks and benefits of loans, or planning for life beyond the degree, taking small, steady steps toward financial stability can make a big difference. September’s workshop covered tax implications for international students, and the next two will be on Financial Planning (October 13) and Student Loans (November 3). We encourage you to sign up for and attend these workshops. Remember, the Grad Grants Center is a valuable resource for finding external fellowship opportunities and help with preparing successful applications.

Graduate education opens doors to many career paths, and the upcoming Graduate Career Diversity Symposium (November 6) is an opportunity to explore how the skills developed in graduate study—critical thinking, communication, creativity, and resilience—translate across sectors. I encourage you to register and attend this event, during which we will provide details on two online resources we have made available to IUB graduate students: Beyond Graduate School and Beyond the Professoriate.

Graduate Student Finances & Funding Workshop Series II: Financial Planning for Graduate Students

In partnership with MoneySmarts, the Graduate School is sponsoring a series of practical, informative workshops designed specifically for graduate students. These workshops will aid in understanding finances, planning for the future, and navigating the complexities of funding.
This second event in the workshop in the series, Financial Planning for Graduate Students, will take place at 10am, October 13, in Wells Library E174. Learn how to build a budget, track expenses, and set financial goals that work for you as a graduate student. Please register here.

Boosting Student Motivation in the Classroom: A Workshop for Grad Student Instructors

Develop your teaching skills as a graduate student instructor! It’s challenging to motivate students in the classroom. This workshop will work with you to adapt or design assignments where students can more clearly map their own goals onto course activities. Attendees should expect to walk away from this workshop with concrete, actionable, and realistic steps they can take to integrate purpose reflection in their current (and future!) undergraduate courses. The event will take place October 16th, at 9am, in Wells Library Hazelbaker room. Please visit this site to learn more and to register.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a research communication event founded by the University of Queensland in 2008. The event challenges master’s and doctoral students to present a compelling oration on their thesis or dissertation research and its significance to a general audience in just three minutes. All graduate students in thesis-bearing programs should consider attending to win prizes, practice your pitch, celebrate graduate research, and cheer on your friends and colleagues!
Preliminary submissions are due January 30th, 2026. The Final Live 3MT event will be February 27, 2026, at 5pm at IU Innovates. Details are available here.

2025 Graduate Career Diversity Symposium: “Getting Hired”

A gathering for graduate students from all disciplines to build communities and glean knowledge, skills, and abilities to succeed in a range of careers.
